STAFFORD NOTES.

THURSDAY, JUNE 20th. (From a correspondent). For some time past the minors of this district have been agitating for lan increased supply of water in the Government system of water races, supplying ibis part of the goldfield. On Wednesday evening, with the object of advancing, requirements in tl'.is connection a representative gathering of miners met Mr 'J'. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., in Turner’s Hall. Mr. IT. Linkktcr presided, and outlined the proceedings of the past meetings to Mr. Seddon and laid before him a scheme which it was hoped would ho practicable. r The pressing need of an increased water supply was again urged, it being pointed out that fully 40 minors wore supplied with the limited water supply of sixteen heads in this cud of the goldfield. Mr. Linklater expressed appreciation of the miners in Mr. Soddon's interest in the past, and of the' Minos Department undertaking extensive repairs and alterations to the water race. Also of the views that the Minos Department was Inn iug reports prepared as to the best method of inci easing tiio supply. Mr. Seddon promised to endeavour to have a trial survey of the proposed scheme made and hoped the goldfields would soon ho supplied with all the water required. The matter of having reservations of mining timber in this district was al :o brought forward. Mr. Seddon advised the minors as to the host means of securing those reservations, and promised his assistance in the matter. Mr. Seddon was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for journeying from j Hokitika to bo present.

A very enjoyable evening took place in the Coronation Hall, Stafford, when a Euchre Tournament was held. A largo contingent of Knmara friends assembled as guests of the Stafford Literary Institute. At the conclusion of the tournament Mr. T. E .Y. Seddon, presented the prizes. Mr. B. Lyons, chairman'of the Institute, in a happy speech welcomed the visitors and Mr. Seddon. The ladies provided dainty refreshments. -

After the Euchre Tournament and supper the company adjourned to Turner’s Hall, where an enjoyable dance was held, Mr and Mrs Mclvor, of Knmara, supplying delightful music. The dance concluded at one o’clock with chedrs for the musicians, the visitors and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” A large contingent of Stafford people intend journeying to Kumara on
