THE RAILWAY DEPARNMENT CRITICISED.

BY RETIRING OFFICER. CHRISTCHURCH, June 14. A presentation to Mr. T. W. Bowles, who has just retired from the position of statiomnastcr at Addington, was made in the Chamber of Commerce yesterday by the Hon. H. F. Wigram, M.L.C., on behalf of a number of Christchurch merchants. The presentation consisted cf a silver tea and coffee service in a handsome case, and a gold albert. Messrs H. Wood and 0. H. Winny referred to the excellent relations which had always existed between Mr Bowles and the merchants, with whom ho had come into contact in the course of his duties.

Ir. replying, Mr. Bowles said that the public did not receive the consideration from the Railway Department that they should do. (Hear hear). He was sorry to say that there were in the service of the Department numbers of men who constituted themselves spies on the others and poured tittle-tattle into the ears of those in charge. These men made an officer’s life a burden to him. He had plenty of work left in him, but had been so worried by tale-hearing, and departmental regulations, that he had thought it better to retire.

•We cannot , speak too highly of Roslyn All-wool Blankets, Rugs, Football Jerseys, Tweeds, Worsteds, Suits, Hoisery, Unshrinkable Flannel, Plaidings and Underwear. “Delta” finish for women and children,—-Advt.
