Replying to a deputation representing women’s societies who protested that the Department of Home Affairs proposed to issue an order to permit dressmarkers to extend their working hours during ‘May and "June in view of the Coronation, Mr. Mastcrman stated that the Queen had made special arrngements to prevent overtime work, on her dresses. He (Mr. Mastcrman) wished that everyone was similarly considerate. Ho promised to reconsider the proposal to issue the order. LABOUR SHORTAGE IN QUEENSLAND. BRISBANE, April, 20.—Official reports show that there is a great shortage of labour in the sugar districts. The growers of the Port Douglas District are arranging to indent British labourers at twenty-five shillings per week.
