THE RACE. fPEtt PRESS ASSOCIATION. --rofTllli lIT AKAIIOA,-April, 17. The second contest for the professional sculling championship of New Zealand ensued to-day on .Akaroa harbour, W. Fogwcll (Australia) challenger, beating the holder, G. Welch (Akaroa), by two lengths. The course was in Akaroa harbour and was 3| miles long. As the result of the race Foe well secures the purse of £2OO, besides the title. Whelch secures the gate which however, was not very very largo. A sou’wester was blowing .and rain fell during a part of the race. Both men got away together, but Whelch ,who was rowing better, soon secured the lead, and at the'end of a fast mile was three-quarters of a length to the good. From there Fogwcll drew away, leading once by five lengths and despite heroic spurts by Whelch, ho never looked in danger of being headed, .finally winning by two lengths, the official time being 21 minutes 1 second. Interviewed after the Contest, Whelch said,he had rowed his last race. Fogwell is to .row the winner of Saturday’s Pearce-Kemp contest for the championship of Australia.
