The House met at 2.30, Mr A Guinness, acting Speaker, in (he chair.

Sir J. G. Ward moved tbat this House desires to phce on record its regret at the death of Mr E J Wright and its appreciation of his services as a/ member of the House of Representatives, and it* recognition of the value of his work as a public man in Canterbury, and th«t it tender to Mrs Wright and other members of the family heartfelt sympathy in their ii reparable loss.

Sir J G Ward, Messrs Massey, Laurenson, Thos M'Kenzie, Flatman, and Meredith paid a tribute to the memory of the late Mr Wright and the motion was agreed to unanimously. „ Sir J G Ward read the following cable from the Right Hon R J Seddon, " I have received a coronation medal at tha hands of his Majesty the King today. I presented the address from the colony, and the Westland casket, also the Maori House and Maori address. They were all graciously accepted by His Majesty, who expressed pleasure personally at their unique and - interesting character, and said they would always remind him of his loyal subjects in New Zealand.

Mr J G Smith asked ths Government whether anything bad boen done to* wards fulfilment or cancellation of the contract with the Blue Star Line for direct steam service to South Africa. Sir J G Ward replied' that about a week or ten days ago, Government served • notice, through the Agent General for the termination of the contract. The Rings and Combines Suppression Bill (Hornsby) was committed. A long discussion took place on Clause 1, Mr Bornsby said if the House would pass the first five clauses of the Bill with amendments be was prepared to abandon the remaining clauses.
