A meeting of ladies was -held in the Literary Institute at 8 p.m on the 30th inst, for the purpose of giving % bocial to Trooper J Linklater, of the Sixth Contingent who returned fnm South Africa a few days ago. Fifteen ladies were pres.nt. After some discussion Mrs Dew was voted to the chair. A committee of seven members was then appointed as follows :— Mesdames Dew and Bernhard, Misses M. Mitchell, J Byrne M "Roberts, M Griffin and E Henue.

Resolved that Mrs Bernhard be appointed hon sec, and Miss M Griffin hon. treasurer respectively.

Resolved that the social be held on the ou the sih June 1902, and that it consist of two parts viz :— Ist part from [8 p.m to 11 p.m, songs games, etc, and supper ; 2nd part from 11 p.m tc 3 a.m, dancing. After a lengthy and somewhat acrimonious discussion, it was resolved that the children be admitted to first part of the social and that the prices of admission be as follows :— Gentlemen 2s, ladies and children free. The matter of providing the various refreshments, etc, was then arranged, after which it was resolved that the following- gentlemen, MessM Sandle. Duff, Dew, Lyons, and Ryde be asked to assist at the social.

Resolved (Ist) that Mr and Mrs Pimpernell, the Messrs.. J. H. and G. Link later, and the Misses Linklater, aud also the returned troopeas of tbe Sixth and Seventh Contingents be invited to the social ; (2nd) that the various local ladies and gentleman be asked; to contribute items for the social ; (3rd) that Mr B. Turner be asked to act as MO; (4th) that a committee meeting be held on the 2nd June atj.3o p.m. - The meeting then terminated.

Good progress is being made with the extension of Gillams Gully Road.

The fuoeral oi the late W. Wilson, senior of Grvymouth, and formerly of Goldsborough was held here to-day and was well attended by residents, of this district.: The funeral -cortege reached the Stafford, cemetery about 230 p.m and was accompanied f rom. Goldsborough to the place of interment by the Goldsborough Brass Band, who, under the baton of Bandmaster F. Martini, impressively played tbe Dead March in Saul. The Rev York of Greymouth, officiated at tbe grave.
