THE HOKITIKA REGATTA.

SECOND DAY. Again the weather for the second day's racing was everything that could be desired, and the attendance of the public was good. The racing was slightly better than on the previous day, the contests being closer and consequently the interest in them acquiring a little more vigor. There was no band engaged, which is to be regretted, as a little music would have added materially to the enjoyment of the day. The first race on the programme was a four-oared race in waterman's skiffs. For this event there were three entries, Prince Alfred, Woodstock Maid, and Faugh-a-Ballagh. After a fairly good race the boats came in, in the order named and they kept the same order during the race. The second race was a sculler's race open to all comers for which there were four entries. Little Hearne won the race, John Wright being a good second. The victory of Hearne was generally popular, although a few persons seemed to think thai he did not deserve his success, in which opinion they are however in a decided minority. The boy rowed well and pluckily and so did the second, Wright. The other two competitors were out of the race mainly perhaps because their boats were

inferior. The Handicap Sailing Race was a capital one. There were four entries, Colleen Bawn, Lily, Victory, and Sea Gull. The two first named were at scratch, the time allowance being Victory one minute and Sea Gull two minutes. The distance was three miles, and the breeze being light the Sea Gull had a decided advantage which she made the most use of under the able steering of Mr Roaers. She came in first with her time allowance to spare, Colleen Bawa second, and Victory third. The Victory was only beaten, with her time allowance included, by a few seconds. The Lily led the first time round but was apparently badly handled and was soon out of the race. A Maori Race and a Duck Hunt concluded the day's sports. A good deal of credit is due to Messrs Rich, Bell, and Hudson, and Captain Turnbull and the honorary secretary, Mr Paul to whose exertions much of the success of the regatta is owing. The following are the particulars of the racing: —

Four-Oared Race— Waterman's skiffs; open to all comers ; distance about 3 miles ; first prize, £7 ; second prize, £3. Robert Ross' Prince Alfred ... 1 James Wright's Woodstock Maid 2 Charles Griffith's Faugh a Ballagh 3 Won rather easily, the boats keeping the order named throughout. Soitller's Race— Open to all corners; distance about 2 miles ; first prize, £10 ; second prize, £2.

This- was a capital race between the first and 6econd, young Hearne eventually winning with something to spare. Handicap Sailing Race— Open to all comers ; distance about 3 miles 5 first prize, £5 ; second prize, 382.

This was also an excellent race a few seconds only dividing the three leading boats. A Maori Cauoe Race and a Duck Hunt concluded the days sports.
