COMMERCIAL.

CANTERBURY: MARKETS.

(from the press, sept. 2.)

Produce. — The grain market continues quit;};, no sales direct from producers' hands having came under bur notice during the week." We have however no change to report in values, buyers' quotations remaining at 4s 3d to is 4d for prime milling wheat, and Is 8d to Is 9d for oats. For barley there is now little demand, and none is offering. Flour is firm, and best brands in gqo^ iuquiry at £li f.ob. in sacks". A rather better feeling is noticeable ip potatoes, some heavy shipments having lately somewhat bared the m.irket. The low prices lately ruling has also caused a little speculation, and holders are firmer at 32s 6d to 355, but any large lots would be difficult to place at the latter figure. Cheese has been offering freely during the week, and sales have been made at 7d. Butter is without alteration at lid; stocks in traders' hands not large. Hams and bacon are in a fair demand, but at this season exports are not so heavy as a little later on. Quotations remain at 9d bare, and 9jd cloth. , ""

Live Stock.— Meßsrs H. Matson and Co. report on the live and dead stock market, &c, for the week ending Friday, September Ist, 1876, as follows:— At the AddiDgton Yards on Wednesday, 142 head cattle, 3097 sheep, and 29 pigs came forward. In cattle the demand for fat stock was yery keen, and many lines realised iully 38s per 1001 b The saleyards are conspicuous for the absence of prime beef, only second quality finding its way to the hammer.

In sheep our entries comprised 2135, at a reduction in yalue in most cases of Is per head; the large pupply of the preceding week having satisfied the demand for the time, the trade was careless of operating except to a limited extent. We have no reason to doubt that prices for really prime mutton will hold good until the spring-fed stock comes to hand;* the sudden rise in value has been temporarily checked by » rush from all quarters, but now j; his has abated we look for more even values being obtained. The large number of medium quality sheep coming to hand tends to make prices irregular. Farmers, and especially squatters, wpujd do well to pay more attention to' the 'classing oitbeir mutton Bheep before allowing them to leave home, as fully one-third might be allowed longer time.
