THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.

MR WHITE AT GOLDSBOROUGH.

Mr White addressed a meeting of e'ectors on Friday evenins at M'Beth's Hotel, Oddfellow's Hall, Goldsborough . Mr li. J. Seddon, of the Big Dam, occupied the chair.

Mr White commenced by stating that he appeared, no doubt, to great disadvantage thri ugh being thoroughly Worn out with tho fatigue of travelling about the country, and that he felt somewhat embarassed, knowing that he was, at it were, in the ftronghold of the enemy. However, he hoped for a patient hearing, and the opinion of good men. He then gave as a reason for retiring from the contest for a seat in the County Council that if all the candidates had stood, Mr Hoos would most probably have been returned, and thus the country would have suffered. Mr White tl en spoke at some length about Mr VogeVs financial scheme, and the Fox-cum-Voge 1 Ministry, and the capitation scheme, the latter as being especially unfair to Westland.

Mr Shand then proposed, and Mr Marfin seconded—" That Mr White was a fit and proyer person to represent them in the As c embly." Mr George Smith, as against the proposition, pointed out that Mr White was unfit to represent a mining commnnity, as he was totally unacquainted wi'b their ■wants ; that a person who had good practical experience, and one who knew what miners most wanted to facilitate their operations, and was well posted up in the requirements of the district was the man ■who suould be returned.

Ultimately, four hands were held up in favor of the proposition, and the meetinz terminated with three cheers for Mr Barff and the mining interest.
