HOSPITAL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Hospital Committee was held last night, at the committc room. There were present — Mr Bonar (in the chair), and Messrs Harvey, Gow, Kvans, Todd, Clayton, 'I 'ait, Cassius, Proctor, and the Secretary. 4 The Secretary read the minute* of the previous meeting, which were confirmed. The following letters were sent since last meeting : — To Mr Birch, Stafford-town, in reference to payments coming from country districts. To Waimea district, in reference to contributions. To Charles Coil, in reference to letter sent to committee To Ross Committee, in reference to deputation. J. C. Gemmel, Blue Spur, in reference to patients coming from country districts ; also to Kanieii and Ilau Hau, on the same subject. To Dr. Maunsell, in reference to duties of nurse and porter. FINANCE. A discussion in reference to finance took j place. The Secretary reported that the County were owing the Hospital £800, and that there was not sufficient funds in hand to pay outstanding accounts. The Secretary was requested to make an early call upon the County Treasurer. The following letters had been received : From Reese and Companj', Wellington, enclosing account for adveitising. It was referred to the Finance Committee. From Greymouth Hospital Committee, stating that they were unable to read rule 6 in the same manner as this committee did. The Secretary was ordered to write, and explain that the difficulty would be met in the same manner as the other committees. APPOINTMENT OF HOSPITAL SERVANTS. Letters were received from the following persons :—: — From John Duncan, G. W. Rickard, and Henry Mino, for the oflice of porter. After some discussion as to which of the applicants should be appointed, it was resolvtd that it should be ballotted for, the result of which was that G. W. Rickards received the appointment From Mrs Cowan, for the situation of night nurse. The Secretary read about a dozen testimonials of the highest character from persons of respectability. It vas proposed by Mr Todd, and 'seconded by Mr Cassidy — " That Mrs Cowan bj elected." Carried, BOSS CONFERENCE. Mr Haryey read the following minutes in reference to the conference which had been held between the Hokitika committee and the Ross committee.

"A meeting of the Totara District Hospital Committee, was held at Cornish's Hotel, Ross. Preseut — Messrs Ayhner (in the chair), Malfroy, Lewis, Hill, Harris, and Cooper.

" A deputation from the Hokitika Hospital, consisting of Messrs Bonar and Harvey, was introduced.

" Mr Bonar explained the object of the meeting. "It Avas pr posed by Mr Harvey as a basis for future relations between the two committees :—

" 1. That a patient shall be deemed td belong to a Hospital district if he shall be domiciled therein, or if 'He, having riß db'z ihicile; shall be taken ill therein 1 . "2. That both committees shall endeavor to ascertain the particulars of the patients already charged for, and communicate result.

" 3. That in future all patients sent by the Ro«s Hospital Committee to Hokitika Hospital, shall be expected to produce & pass from the committee, and if a patient should present himself without siicn pass 1 , ahd should be admitted, full particulars shall be forwarded to the Totara Committee, in order that enquiries may be made respecting him, and the Totara Committee shall not be charged with the expense of such patient, unless that they shall certify that such patient is a fit and proper person to receive assistance, and that the same rule shall be observed in cases where the patients are sent to Ross trom other districts. If patients should be sent from Kanieri or Waimea to Ross, with the sanction of the committee of those districts, Ilokitika Committee to pay Totara Committee for them, and charge expenses to such district. " Seconded by Mr Malfroy, and carried. " J. Aylmer, " President Totara Ross Hospital. " 18th December, 1869."

The Rev. J. Gow stated that he understood that George Smart, the night watchman; a very old servant had been idischargid from the hospital, and superseded. The circumstances of the ease had caused some astonishment 'o many persons. It was explained that the office had been abolished, and that Smart was not so suitable a person for day wardsman as the per* son who now held it.

After some discussion on the matter, it was decided that the House Committee, at their next meeting consider if anything could be done for Smart.

The meeting then adjourned until Monday evening.
