LATEST FROM NAPIER.

The Weli.'iigton Independent, of August 18, gives the following :— "Napier, August 17. "Despatches have been received from Colonel Whitmore to-day. The battle •was fought at a place nine miles from the Urewera boundary. There were five killed, and five wounded, one of whom has since died. The wounded reached Wairoa on Thursday. " Colonel Whitmore has gone round to Poverty Bay to bring round the Waipara. "It is a bad thing that the dead were left behind. " Rumors continue to be received at Napier ef a large party of Urewaras having their rendezvous in the direction of Ru- i nanga, in the Taupo conntry. It h nof certain if such a body of men be there, that their intentions are at present hostile to the Europeans, but means have been *! -adopted by the Government to obtain accurate information. "Captain Corbett, who wont to Taupo for information of the shite of affairs there, has not yet returned. He is hourly expected. "The militia have been called out for inspection of arms." NEWS FBOJI OrOTIKI. By the cutter Whitby, which arrived yesterday, we have news from Opotiki lo the 6th inst. It is believed by those who know the situation of Opotiki, and tho natives who hold tho country al the back that the return of the Hau Hau prisoners from the Chatham Islands will have a bad effect, by encouraging the Ureweras to make incursions on the so< ilement of Opotiki. This had not yet tab n place, for two reasons probably— tho prisoners had not, at the latest dato«, succeeded in making their escape to the bush, where they are almost certain to associate with the Ureweras ; and also because there are no scattered settlers about Opotiki to attack, the whole population being concentrated in the township. We Uvnx, however, from Captain Doughty,

that considerable alarm was felt at Opotiki. A large number of men were upon pay. Haii Hau fires were seen on tlic ranges, but no rebels had ventured near town, We learn that a great man;/ of the settlers of Opotilri arc leaving the place. Seventeen came up in the "Whitby, many of whom are fo proceed to the Thames. — " Southern Cross," Aug. 12.
