Banking Company have declared a dividend equal to 'six per cent., and have also resolved to issue eighteen thousand new shares. •Private letters received by the Geelong mail announce the death, at Cork, of Dean Hayes, of Melbourne. Tho banquet to the members of tho Sladen Ministry, yesterday, was in every respect a success.

August 8. The Hon. John Sherwin, M.L.C., is dangerously ill. Mr Sherwin had to submit to the amputation of a portion of one of his arms a short timo ago, and ho has since then been too unwell to leave Menzies' Hotel for his own home.

Mr O. W. Ligar, the Surveyor-General, is about to visit Europe on leave of absence. Mr Skeene will probably be appointed locum tenens in his absence. Mr Nixon, of the Glassworks, who had lately been unwell, but it was not thought seriously so, died last night in the "Melbourne Hospital. The steamship Alhambra sailed for Maryborough to-day, -with 250 diggers for Gympie. Tho pedestrian match between Mr J. G. Harris, of Melbourne, and Mr W. Braithwaite, of Sydney, came off at Northcote, to-day. The match was for lSOj'ards, and £200 aside. Mr Harris won the race easily, with twelvo yards to spare.
