VICTORIA.

Tho " Argus" of the 24th reports :—: —

In the import markets an exceedingly dull and uninteresting day has been passed, the early departure of the mail, and more especially the excitement caused by the existing political crisis, have for the moment succeeded in making business matters a secondary consideration altogether. In breadstuff's, transactions in flour are on a very limited scale, and the market consequently is far from strong. No actual sales having been reported we make no alteration in quotations ; but we hear of country flour being offered as low as Lll and Llo lss, without inducing buyers to operate. There are a few parcels of Victorian wheat in tho market, for which 5s is asked, but there are no purchasers over 4s 9d. In maize there is little doing; quotations remain at 3s 2d. Barley and oats are neglected. We noto a good inquiry for teas. Half-chests, being very scarce, are much wanted, and several moderate-sized lines of fino medium congous have been placed in consequence at up to Is 9d. A shipment of Gail Borden's condensed milk has been quitted at 15s. The extremely low prices ruling for kerosene oil having attracted attention, a holder of Downer's has succeeded in placing a lino of 4000 cases of that brand on terms withheld; there is, however, no change to report on late rates of 2s 3d to 2s 4d for trade parcels. Sales of sugaas are mentioned at LB4 15 for light counters. The auction sale of tobaccoes resulted more satisfactorily. The samples offered consisted mostly of light aromatics, and the quality was superior. About eighty packages found buyers ; faulty brought Is 4d to Is 6£d, while fancy sorts in sound condition realised Is 9£d to 2s 3£d. In liquids, sales of Byass's stout have been made at 8s; outside brands, with less character, have been disposed of at 7s 9d, and even lower rates. Of the finer descriptions no sales have come under our notice. A shipment of Honnessy's pale brandy in quartercasks has changed hands at a concession on 6s 3d the rate ruling for small parcels.
