CHRISTCHURCH.

The " Press " of Monday last says :—: —

The operations of the past week have been a little brisker than the preceding week, trade generally being in a stagnant state, aud. considerable difficulty experienced in meeting current engagements. The fourth of the month is looked forward to with mucti anxiety, as during the past week several retail dealers have been obliged to call their creditors together. It has been an assumod fact that many insolvents have shown an extremely reckless system of trading j but there are numbers of others who have been obliged to succumb to the pressure of the times through no fault of their own. It is therefore, to be hoped that the new Bankruptcy Act now before the General Assembly will, to a greater extent than at present, be the means of preventing fraudulent insolvency, protecting the creditors, and assisting the unfortunate.

The arrival of the Red Rover and Blue Jacket, from London, will completely overdo this market, alaeady sufficiently overstocked ; importers, therefore, need not look for any advance in values for some time to come. In colonial produce wheat is still in request at 3s 9d to 4s per bushel for good" milling. Fine clean seed fetches Gs. Bran and sharps are shipped to order in largo parcels at L 4 10s per ton for the former and L 3 15s for the latter. Little is doing in oats ; buyers offer 2s to 2s 3d, but sellers are not thrusting stocks on the market. Barley is not in demand. Potatoes continue at L 2 10s to L 2 15s, with light inquiry. Hay is changing hands freely at L 4 10s for best meadow.
