DUNEDIN.

The " Daily Times" of the 20th ult., reports :—: —

During the early part of the month, and up to the present week, business remained quiet and dull as at the date of last report. I . is, however, possible to speak more favorably*bf the business of the past few days : and though no special interest has attached to anything which has transpired, transactions to a more satisfactory extent have taken place, and trade closes with a sensibly improved demand. The amount of goods despatched for coastwise orders has been light, aud is accounted for by tho late closing up of the principal port on tho West Coast, and consequent influx at one time of nearly all the supplies forwarded during the course of several weeks. Storekeepers requirements havo also been light ; the state of tho weather interfering with tho forwarding of goods to the interior of the Province ; tho winter season is now, however, drawing to a close, and orders for spring sup plies commencing to come to hand. Tho market still labors under heavy stocks of several items, which havo been found very difficult to quit, aud on tho shipments of which loss has uniformly beon submitted to. The reverse has been the case with some other leading goods, but on the whole importers' profita at the present timo scarcely more than balance. Tho changes in value which have occurred have beon trifling, prices in most instances nearly approaching previous quotations j prices possessing an encouraging degree of firmness. The amount of imports | has been extremely light — the ships Lady Egidia, with genoral cargo, from London, and Parisian, from British Columbia, with timber, being the only arrivals since tho 20th ultimo. There is nothing in tho state of tho money market which is easy to notice. Rates of discount ou bills not oxceeding 95 ! days' currency, 8 per cent, j above that term, I 9 per cent. Rates of exchange selling on London at 60 days' sight, 1 por cent, premium; at 30 days', 1£ per cent. ; at 3 days', 2 per cent. ; on Melbourne, £ per ceut. ; on Sydney and tho other Australian Colonies, 1 per cent, premium.
