FARM MOWER CAN BE DANGEROUS THING
The farm mower, probably one ot the most common implements on New Zealand farms, is undoubtedly a dangerous machine if it is not used properly or if the user takes risks. The Department of Agriculture recommends that attention be paid to the following precautions:— Never dismount while the mower is in gear or while the power take-off is running. With a horse mower, never clear the cutter-bar with the hands or stand in front of the cutter-bar. Always use power take-off shields and belt or chain covers and do not wear a scarf or long, loose clothing. Do not allow children or dogs in a paddock while it is being mown. The mower is a machine which requires regular attention to the sharpening of the knife as well as a thorough overhaul once a season If it is to work with maximum efficiency. An article in the “Journal of Agriculture ’ describes how to get the most satisfactory results from a mower.
