AUCKLAND BATSMEN FAIL AGAINST WELLINGTON SIDE
1 WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA). , —An Auckland team which fell a : long way below the standard of j former years in batsma'nship, failed t badly in its first innings in the Plunket Shield match against Wellington, j which began at the Basin Reserve on . | Saturday, but it fought back stub- ( | bornly in its second knock. . I At stumps on the seco'nd day, today, i Auckland’s tally was 117 and 39 for ’ one wicket, in reply to Wellington’s - : 234. f ' | With the exception of the latter ' period of today and yesterday when ’ . the wicket rolled out very easy the 1 conditions favoured the bowlers who 1 were able to move the ball in the air and off the seam. Nevertheless, the absence of really good stroke play left the crowd impatient. Exceptions were Cleal and Coleman, of Auckland, and Vance, Reid, Dollery and Murray, Wellington. The home side did at least produce some cricket which could be relished. Vance improved his prospects of becoming a New Zealand representative by a'n opening knock which combined grand defence with some polished strokes. There was disappointment and surprise when Dollery went cheaply, bowled round his legs by Cammish, an Englishman now resident of Aucki land, who kept quite a teasing length } a'nd also moved the ball disconcerting•ly.
