Fist Fights, But Strike Supported

INVERCARGILL, Last Night (PA). —Uproar was caused at a meeting of Southland railwaymen on Saturday night, when it is reported that fists were swung and punches thrown. About 200 men attended the meeting. which decided, by a substantial majority, to obey the call of the national executives of the railway I unions to take strike action. j About 60 members voted against striking and the scene when “a certain | element’ ’tried to take charge of the meeting, was described by an official as “most deplorable.” Steps will be taken by the union officials to prevent a recurrence of similar trouble. About 700 railway workers in Southland are affected.
