Beaumaris And Regoli May Win Cup And Railway Double On Ellerslie Opening Day

AUCKLAND, Last Night, (Special).—Richest race yet to be run in New Zealand, the Auckland Cup, with a stake of £12,600, including the trophy, will be the feature at Ellerslie tomorrow for the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting, and it has attracted a grand field.

The railway strike may affect the attendance slightly, and for that reason it may be expected that the totaiisator turnover will not exceed the £322,000 put through last Boxingg Day though the operation of the doubles machine with the Railway Handicap as the second leg may make up any leeway.

Speculation on the valuable Auckland Cun is going to take a big range. Beaumhris and Calibrate, the two topweights, were the early favourites, but Tudor Prince galloped brilliantly last week and he will be in demand. The recent successes ot Lord Foxbridge have been impressive and as he may be permitted to make the pace there is still the chance that he may not be caught. Vigilantia was regarded as the most unlucky horse in Che Auckland Cup Trial earlier in the month. He is bred to stay, and at a reasonable mark in the handicap he should be a difficult horse to beat. There will be plenty of support for others, notably Signify, Royal Bouquet, Biassed, Equator, King Finchall (on an easy track), Earldale and Foxbay. Interest, too, will be taken in the chances of Zenith. However, Beaumaris would only need to enjoy a good passage to be the hardest horse to beat. A grand array cf sprinting talent is engaged in the Railway Handicap. Miss Kanui can go very fast, but may be the rank outsider. Regoli is the new bright star and if he gets away he will test the better performed gallopers, even if he beat only a very poor Held the other day. Ptolemy may be the hardest to beat, for he is on the up grade. Air Belle, like Ptolemy, is a previous winner at Ellerslie. Lord Moss goes best when fresh and he will have his chance, and so, too, will Gold Script and Chatrlll. The latter may be a surprise packet. Castlebrae won at Riccarton, and is also in the final race. Correspond and Personage are brilliant fillies, but the former to date has not been quite smart enough in the early part to win here, even if she has improved. This race will be won from or very near the front. ’ Personage is a very nice filly, and if she is in the first three at the turn her victory could be acclaimed. Regoli and Ptolemy may light it out. The following should go well in their engagements:— Robinson Handicap.—First division: Dartcetact, Journalist. Second division: Royal Nib, Pheroz Girl. Grafton Hurdles. —Kauri Pine, Kyrat, Ernbrae. Nursery Handicap. First division: Goldfield, Earl Denby. Second division: Sobranie, Taressa. Auckland Cup.—Beaumaris, Lord Foxbridge, Vigilantia. Queen’s Plate.—Paper Strip, Keith, Topmast. Great Northern Foal Stakes. —Scorned, Taj Mahal, Gloaming Prince. Railway Handicap.—Regoli, Ptolemy, Lord Moss. Christmas Handicap.—The Unicorn, Star Fox, Balcombe.
