NEW PLYMOUTH VICAR IS NEW BISHOP OF WAIKATO
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (PA). —The Rev. J. T. Holland, vicar of §t. Mary’s Parish, New Plymouth , has been appointed to the Bishopric of Waikato to succeed the late Rt. Rev. C. A. Cherrington. This was announced this evening by the Archbishop of New Zealand, Archbishop West-Watson.
Mr. Holland graduated B.A. from University College, Oxford in 1933. and took his M.A. degree in 1937 after a theological course at Westcott House, Cambridge. He was ordained deacon in 1935, and priest in 1936 in the diocese of Wakefield, England. After serving us assistant curate in Huddersfield Pai’sh from 1935 to 13J7. He was a; pointed vicar of Feather ;ton in the Welling.on Diocese New Zealand in 193 t He serve-u as chaplain to the forces from 1941 to 1945 and during that time was with th- New Zealand Division in (he Aiiddl* East and Italy. After his return, he became vicar ot St. Peter’s, Upper Riccarton, in the Diocese of Christchurch, where he remained until his removal to New Plymouth in 1949. Mr Holland is the elder son of 'he Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, former Bishop of Wellington and now Dean of Norwich, England.
