Rail Dispute In U.S. Is Ended
WASHINGTON, Dec 21 (Recd 6 pm).—The long dispute between the railway companies and the unions was settled today with a three-year agreement granting pay increases to about 300,000 workers. The agreement, which includes cost-of-living adjustments, may set the pattern for Governments wage stabilisation policies because it was hammered out under Government sponsorship and virtually ensures the unions will not strike for wage increases.
Railway companies estimate the wage increases ranging up to 23 cents an hour will cost about 130,000,000 dollars a year. The agreement covers drivers, firemen, shunters and guards mainly in the shunting yards.
