WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

A large gathering of members and friends attended the December meeting of the Taihape Women’s Institute. Among the guests were the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs E. Loader. The hall was decorated for the occasion and presented a festive appearance. ‘ Mrs Pierce presided. Members were remir.-led of the Motu group meeting ’ to be held in Mangaweka on the fourth Tuesday in February, and of j the picnic on the fourth Thursday in ? January. Mrs Old presented the hosj pital report and Mrs Arrowsmith submitted a report cn the food parcels. The motto, “Merry Hearts Kill More Microbes Than Any Medicine,” was given by Mrs Evans. The roll call was E conducted by Mrs Millar, and members were required to sing, whistle or > pay a “fine” of 3d. This cau / d much [ merriment and increased the funds of ? the institute. The choir entertained > with several items, the most impres- . sive being the singing of Christmas carols by cantielight. A Christmas cake was donated by . Mrs H. S. Marsh. The paper hat com- ■ petition was won by Mrs Ashenden [ and Messrs W. Hudson and A. Hostesses for February will be Mesdames G. Belk [ (convener), Bolton, Barrowman, Harvey and R. Dellow. DEVIATION COMPLETED. The deviation near Mr J. Law’s resii dence at Taoroa has now been completed and this improvement to the i road is much appreciated by motorists. , Work on this particular job had been in progress for several months and in wet weather motorists found themselves in difficulties, but their problems have now been solved. OTAIHAPE CLUB’S PARTY, The Christmas party held at the Otaihape Club last Wednesday was a 1 jolly affair, a large attendance of members being present for the occasion. The supper was served under the supervision of the steward, Mr H. C. Webby and Mrs Webby. Pride of place was accorded the Christmas cake provided by Mrs Webby. The season’s greetings were conveyed to members by the president, Jr T. V. Auld, who thanked Mr aifd Mrs Webby for the supper arrangements. INQUEST ADJOURNED. An inquest oin Mrs Rachael Kelly, who was found unconscious at her home in Aldridge’s Terrace, Taihape, on Wednesday evening and died in hospital a few hours later, was opened before the district coroner, Mr E. Loader, at Taihape on Thursday evening and adjourned after evidence of identification had l?een taken. TENNIS PLAYERS STAY NIGHT. The four professional tennis players who are on a tour of New Zealand, Budge, Parker, Gonzales and Pails stayed the night at Taihape on Thursday and left yesterday for Masterton. They will play at Wellington today (Saturday) and will leave Auckland tomorrow for Australia. Mr Pails, manager of the team, said yesterday that the troupe had enjoyed the tour and were well satisfied with the support of the public. There were some promising young players in New Zealand and particularly in Auckland, he said. The team left Taihape for Masterton about 8 a.m. CREAM FOR CHRISTMAS. Two milk vendors said yesterday that if customers required cream for . Christmas it must be ordered in advance. It was uneconomical, they ) said, to carry cream on their milk ; rounds on the off chance that it would , be needed. Cream not sold would be a dead loss and therefore it was necessary for intending purchasers co order • in advance. 21 YEARS’ SERVICE. 1 Twenty-one years’ service in the ' employ of the Cascade Brewery Co., Ltd., was completed by Mr. J. Nicholson on Friday, and to mark the ocI casion he was entertained by the staff at a social gathering at the brewery and presented with a crystal set. The presentation was made by Mr. J. T. Coutts, who referred to the manner in which Mr, Nicholson had discharged his duties, and congratulated ! him on his long service with the company. The occasion could not be allowed to pass without some expression of appreciation, remarked Mr. Coutts, in handing the gift to Mr. 5 Nicholson. Other speakers included Messrs. J. Thorburn, A. Saba, George Smith ■ (who recently completed 21 years' • service), and other members of the staff. ' CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND ' The Taihape Borough Council has ‘ decided to spend up to £2O on im--1 ppovements to the children’s play- . ground in Papaki Road, at the request of the Taihape Rotary Club. ’ The suggested improvements include fencing the paddling pool, additional - seating accommodation, a flight of : concrete steps down to the river, and the widening of the cattle stop en- ■ trance. PERSONAL Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Lambert and family are on a motoring tour of the - North Island. Mr. Lambert, who was headmaster of the Mataroa School, • will take up a similar position at Ohi- • ngaiti when the schools re-open in February after the Christmas holidays. Mr. Lamber and family were farewelled at Mataroa recently and received handsome gifts. PERSONAL. At the annual meeting of the Ran-giwaea-Bulls Junction Sports Club on Thursday Mr S. Livingston was reelected president and Mr L. W. Bell ■ I was appointed secretary.
