GIANT LINERS PREPARE FOR THE FESTIVAL OF BRITAIN
SOUTHAMPTON, Dec. 18. The giant liners, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, Caronia and Mauretania, are being overhauled and repainted before they carry United States passengers to the Festival of Britain next year. Work has already been completed on the Queen Mary. Fifteen hundred men overhauled and cleaned the ship in five weeks, using 2000 gallons of paint for the liner’s exterior, 2000 gallons for the interior. Eight tons of anti-fouling and anti-corrosive composition were used for the underwater part of the hull. Thousands of curtains and miles of carpeting were removed for dry cleaning. She will be followed into the dry dock “beauty parlour” by the Caronia, which will in turn be succeeded by the Mauretania, and linally, by the Queen Elizabeth.—Reuter.
