SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Miss Ina Haybittie was a visitor to Wanganui this week from Hawera. Mrs. Norris Long, of Palmerston North, who has been visiting Hawera, arrived in Wanganui on Wednesday to stay with Mrs. W. Baker. Mrs. J. A. Houston, Wanganui, has left to spend the holidays with her mother, Mrs Stokes, Hawera. Mrs. Carnegie, wife of Air ViceMarshal Sir Arthur Nevill as Chief of Air Staff, will arrive at Wellington by the Rangitata on January 2. Mrs. D. N. McGrail Fordell, and Mrs. N. C. Lewis Liverpool Street, sail from Wellington on Saturday for a holiday visit to relatives in Scotland. Leaving for England shortly are Miss W. Mitchell and Miss E. Myers, of the staff of the Wanganui Girls' College, the latter having left the school and the former granted twelve months leave of absence. • Sir John Anderson, chairman of the Port of London Authority, accompanied by Lady Anderson, will visit New Zealand next month as the guest of the Government. He will inspect facilities at the main ports. Arriving at Auckland by air from Sydney on January 8. Sir John Anderson, accompanied by Lady Anderson, and his secretary, Miss Tait, will be in New Zealand until February 22. Mr. E. S. Birch. Sydney representative of the Port of London Authority, will accompany Sir John Anderson on his Dominion tour. Engagement Party An evening of music was enjoyed on Tuesday when a party to celebrate the engagement of Miss Edwina Hogg to Mr. D. Collier, of Levin was held at the residence of Mrs Hogg, Campbell Street. Duets were sung by Mrs McGrath and Mrs Gurr, vocal solos by Mr. Collier, and pianoforte selections by Mrs. P. Penman, Mrs Marlow and Miss Casey. Staff Entertained On Tuesday evening the D.I.C. management entertained the buyers and senior members of the staff at a 6 o'clock cocktail party at the Rut- 1 land Lounge. Mr. A. Harper wished all present the compliments of the season, and greetings were exchanged. On Wednesday night the management and social commitee arranged a social and dance to entertain all the Staff. It was held in the Savage Club Hall, and games, dancing and competitions were enjoyed. After supper, provided by the firm, dancing was resumed and concluded a happy function.

CAIRD-MAYES.—Mr. and Mrs J. P. Mayes, of Gonville have pleasure in announcing the engagement of their only daughter Dawn to Johnny eldest son of Mrs. E. N. Caird of Aramoho. HICKEY-BOURKE.—Mr. and Mrs. Bourke Waeraroa Road Waverley have pleasure in announcing the engagement of their only daughter Eileen Mary to Michael John elder son of Mrs. and the late Mr. John Hickey Ihaia Road Opunake.
