MEN REMAIN AT WORK IN WANGANUI; POSITION TO BE REVIEWED TODAY
Rumours swept the city yesterday about Wanganui railwaymen following the Auckland lead and striking as a protest against the recent wage increases. As far as could be ascertained up to a late hour last night, however, no immediate action is anticipated in this district. Trains ran to schedule yesterday and last night, and local departmental officers had received no advice of pending action which would affect the area.
The executive of the Wanganui branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railv# y Servants met yesterday to o.iscuss developments, but the secretary, Mr G. Lawrence, said later that he could make no statement for publication.
Executive officers of the Wanganui branch of the Enginedrivers’, Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association could not be contacted, out it is understood that no action was contemplated yesterday.
Whether the position will be altered today will depend on what Cabinet doos in the matter and what reaction there is by the parent, executives of the respective organisations.
