HAWERA CANDIDATES FOR TOMORROW’S EVENTS

HAWERA, Last Night.—Final gallops of Hawera horses engaged at New Plymouth and Awapuni tomorrow took place this morning in line weather. The centre of the course proper and the plough were in fairly fast order. Bella Mia (Thomas), with the inside running, finished five lengths ahead of Robin’s Reward (Parker) and Fearless Gain (Belsham) over a mile in 1.43. Bella Mia has worked well of late and a return to the useful form she displayed last season would make her a dangerous contender in the Christmas Handicap. Robin’s Reward may be just too gross to win his third Manawatu Cup. He had a gallop at Levin when the races were postponed, but it did not clean him up as well as a race would. Bravo (Belsham) sprinted five furlongs in 1.3 2-5. A four-year-old Wotan gelding, he has performed satisfactorily in two outings to date. Mallow (Mills) defeated Kia Ora Katoa (Scott) by about five lengths over seven furlongs in 1.31. The New Plymouth track has invariably suited Mallow, who is to make his hurdle debut there on Saturday. Mallow has never looked In better order and as he has been schooled brilliantly in private, his speed on the flat should keep the opposition busy in the Rahotu Hurdles. Lady Quick (Belsham) completed seven furlongs in 1.31. Gaelic Tweed (Scott) and Smudge (Belsham) ran five furlongs on terms in 1.5 3-5. Elreann (Mills) finished a couple of lengths in front of Clones (Belsham) and Strathconan (Scott) at the end of five furlongs in 1.3. Elreann has come to hand well lately. Clones is a big filly who may be seen to better advantage as the season progresses. N. R. McKenzie left for New Plymouth early this morning with a strong team ” comprising Rev, Master Mink, Vigorous, Energetic and Gay Claire. They are all form horses who should figure prominently during the circuit. Riding engagements include:— J. McFarlane: Rev, Master Mink, Gay Claire, Energetic, Vigorous, Belle Lpch. N. Bbisham: Bella Mia, Atello, Enthuse, Impulsive, Homing Pigeon, Lady Quick, Bravo. A. Cardno: Francis Mond, Reremai. A. J. Rust: Odysseus, R. Mead: Sea Lion.
