Father Stopped Too Long To Talk; Son Fined For Double-Parking

A youth drove into Marton and double-parked in Broadway to let his father out of the car. The latter intended to be away for only a short period, but his return was delayed when he stopped and talked too long in the street. In the meantime the traffic officer arrived on the scene and spied the double-parked vehicle.

This was the story told to Mr. A. Coleman, S.M., in the Marton court yesterday morning when John Birch (Marton) was convicted and fined 5/- (costs 10/-) for double parking. Through Mr. J. R. L. Stanford, defendant pleaded guilty. There was ample parking space in Broadway available at the time, said Traffic Officer, W. C. Shaw. Doubleparking, he stressed was prevalent in Marton and the case had been brought as a warning. Remarking that double-parking was a nuisance and heavier fines could be expected in the future for this class of offence, Mr. Coleman said he would be influenced on this occasion by the father’s conduct, and imposed a light penalty. A Wanganui youth, Colin Frederick Bates, who had previous convictions in the Wanganui court, was charged with failing to display “L” plates on his motor-cycle and for having a defective silencer. Mr Shaw said he stopped defendant because of the noise the cycle was making. On the first charge defendant was fined 10/- (costs 10/-) and on the second £3 (costs 10/-). An airman from Ohakea Air Force Station, Lionel James Butler, was seen by the traffic officer riding a motor-cycle with a pillion rider on the back. There were, however, no foot-rests on the cycle for carrying passengers. Defendant was given a “ticket” but two hours after he was seen again in Bulls with a different passenger as a pillion rider, and still the cycle was without foot-rests. On the charge of having no footrests on his cycle he was fined £1 (costs 12/-) and for not having a driver’s licence the penalty and costs were the same. For having a wrong class of driver’s licence, William Clarke (Kata) was fined £1 (costs 12/-). The offence was committed at Rata. Returning from the Wellington races a taxi-driver from Hawera, Sydney Frederick Cleaver was checked at travelling through Turakina at 50 rn.p.h. For exceeding the 30 rn.p.h. speed limit he was fined 30/(costs 10/-). Pleading guilty through his counsel (Mr. D. Stanford), Albert Edward Cook (Wanganui) was fined 30/(costs 10/-) for driving without due care and attention on the BullsTurakina Road. Defendant crossed the State Highway intersection at Bulls at between 40 and 45 rn.p.h. said Mr. Shaw and then pulled out to pass a bus near the apex of the hill. The question was whether defendant had clear visability ahead, said Mr. Shaw. When stopped defendant said he was in a hurry and anxious to get to Palmerston North. Defendant was not disputing tne speed, said Mr. Stanford, but the driver considered it was more important to keep his eye on the road, rather than on the speedometer. Defendant, he said, was of the opinion when he passed the bus, that he had ample visability. For exceeding the gross load of a bridge on the Turakina Beach Road, Dave Domett Ltd. (Feilding) w ?£ e fined £2 (costs 10/-). The traffic officer said the bridge was sign-posted that its maximum gross load was six tons Defendant’s heavy load and lorry had a gross weight of nine tons 18 cwt. A Chinaman, Pamson For, returninc to his home in Wanganui was checked travelling at 50 rn.p.h. when passing through the restricted area of Turakina. He was fined £2 (costs 10/-). . „ Parking his car on a bus stop—a prohibited area—in Marton, cost William Gregory Hackshaw (Halcombe) 10/- (costs 12/-). For having insufficient Jighting on his vehicles, Leslie Gordon Hall (Feilding) was fined £1 (costs 10/-). On a further charge of operating an unlicensed trailer he was fined £2 (costs 12/-. Defendant was driving a car towing a trailer, said Mr. Shaw. There was no blue fight on the car nor a tail-light on the trailer. While on patrol in the Hunterville district, Mr. Shaw stopped George William Ernest Leach (Hunterville) and found' that his vehicle did not possess a warrant of fitness nor an effective rear vision mirrow. He was fined 10/- (costs 12/-) on the first charge and £1 (costs 10/-) on the second. Margaret Sharpe (Auckland) was fined 10/- (costs 10/-) for no warrant of fitness for her car and a further 10/- (costs 10/-) for having no licence sticker displayed. Travelling at 60 rn.p.h near Bulls with a pillion passenger, a motorcyclist, * Raymond Ronald Turley (Wellington) was fined £3 for exceeding the 40 rn.p.h. limit allowed while carrying a pillion passenger.
