The only competition game scheduled fcr last Saturday between Taihape and Country was played for the most part in light but persistent rain. Heavy showers caused interruptions to the play and conditions were completely against the bowlers. This is evidenced by the fact that in little more than three and a-half hours’ actual playing time some 338 runs were scored. In these circumstances neither tide finished an innings, and the game resumed in a draw. Highlight of the game was the hoisting of the first century of the season by K. Nicholls, who made 102 not out, and with N. Ashenden (80), added 139 runs for the fourth wicket in Taihape’s innings. Scores were: Taihape, 232 for 5, declared; Country, 106 for 6 at stumps. The R.S.A. children’s party held in the Drill Hall on Saturday, attracted a large attendance of youngsters, many of whom wore fancy dresses. The highlight of the event was the arrival of Father Christmas, who distributed gifts to the children from a Christmas tree. He also visited the hospital and a few* homes of sick children to bestow gifts. Ice cream and other delicacies were provided for the youngsters attending the party. SCHOOL BROKEN INTO. Recently the Rongoiti School in the Mataroa district was broken into and two boxes, valued at 10s, the property of Peter James Watt, teacher in charge of the school, were damaged. The sequel was heard in the Taihape Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning, when Abraham Hiwi was charged with committing mischief by wilfully damaging the boxes. A charge of breaking and entering against Te Hiwi was reduced to one of mischief at the request of Senior-Sergeant R Griffith, who conducted the prosecution for the police. The defendant pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Griffith said Mr Watt locked up the school on December 2. When he returned the following day he found that somebody had entered the school by means of an unfastened window. The police were notified and Constable C. Chesnut t made enquiries. Subsequently he interviewed defendant, who admitted that he had entered the school. To Hiwi said hp was in a shearing gang and had walked from Taihape to Rongoiti. He had entered the school and broken open the boxes because he was hungry and >was locking for something to eat. Defendant had one previous Conviction, said the senior-ser-geant. The Bench told Te Hiwi that he was extremely fortunate that the charge had been reduced to one of mischief. A fine of £5 was imposed and defendant was also ordered to pav 10s to cover tlie cost of damage to the boxes. Messrs E. Loader and W. Hudson, J’s.P., occupied the Bench. PERSONAL The death has occurred at the age of 6.) years of Mr. B. A. Fraser, an early Taihape setller and former Taihape businessman. For many years the late Mr. Fraser conducted a saddlery business. In his younger days he was a prominent sportsman. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Jessie Ferguson, Mangaweka and four sons, Messrs. Don, Alec. Malcolm and Fred. Competing in the national dancing competitions at Masterton on Saturday, Fay Patrick was second in the Highland fling under 12 years, and third in the sword dance. Mr. R. J. Wilkinson was a competitor in the N.Z. “slow air” piping championship. TRUCK OVER BANK A truck wont over the bank on tho main north road near the residence of Mrs. M. Jensen on Saturday, but the damage to the vehicle was r.9t extensive. Tho driver was for- i tunate to escape serious injury. •
