HIGH TIME UNITED NATIONS STOPPED KOREAN BRUTALITY

Comment On Stand Taken By A British Brigadier

LONDON, Dee 19 (Recd. 6.12 p.m.).—‘'There will be very strong support in Britain for the decision of Brigadier Tom Brodie, commander ofthe 29th British Brigade, to tolerate no more Korean atrocities and mass execution in the area under his command, says the “News Chronicle,” in an editorial today.

“It is full time his example was followed by General Mac- , Arthur. ‘lt is sometimes said that the United Nations authorities cannot suppress Korean addiction to brutality." adds the editorial. “This is not true. They can and must stop it. We are fighting for men's freedom in Korea, not for litvnsed murder. If we fail to insist on civilised behaviour by the South Koreans, our own cause is weakened morally. It will lose the support of many decent people. It may even lose some of the loyalty of its soldiers on th« spot." The “News Chronicle" says that atrocities by North Koreans are no excuse for reprisals by* the South. “The United Nations charwpions the rule of law and it opposes the rule of club and firing squad,” says the paper. "It must oppose them wherever they are found."

The Manchester “Guardian” says that it would do something to restore United Nations credit in the Asian world if those responsible for the executions were shot.
