Manawatu Cup Topweight, Pierre, In Impressive Mile Gallop At Trentham

WELLINGTON, Last Night. Highlight of the track work at Trentham this morning was the display of the Manawatu Cup topweight, Pierre, in company with Royal Tan (Also in the Cup)'and Renowned over a mile on the trial grass, which was in excellent order for fast work.

Dowry, Robin Dayes and Bambton were also responsible for satisfactory gallops over the same ground, and most impressive among the sprinters were Alison, Blue Streak and Fortuna. Autocrat (Thompson) ran home the last half-mile of his work in 54 2-ssec. W. Wood has the Royal Chief gelding in splendid order for holiday racing. Field Marshal (Handley) was travelling easily half a length in front of Merry Miller (Jago) at the end of seven furlongs in 1.38 3-5, the last three taking 42 2-ssec. Veine d’Or (Wallace) ran right away from Scamper (Spratt) and King Leo (Holland) over the final stages of six furlongs, the last four being run in 55sec and the three in 39 3-ssec. The first-named is very well and may be seen to advantage during the Manawatu meeting. Dexter (Bryce) ran half a mile easily in 53sec. The southerners Airwork (Eastwood) and Royal Monarch (Anderson) covered six furlongs in 1.20 2-5, the last four in 51 2-ssec. The former was the more impressive. Fortune (Spratt) ran the last half-mjle of her work under a good hold in 51 4-ssec. She worked very keenly and has improved in the past few weeks. Alison (Bryce) and Blue Streak (McFarlane) sprinted five furlongs, the last four being cut out in 50 4-5 sec. Both worked pleasingly, particularly the former, who promises to be hard to beat in her engagement at Awapuni on Saturday. Blue Streak is an unraced half-sister by Tiderace to Air Belle, and she shows promise. Zala (McFarlane) ran a smart seven furlongs in 1.29 3-5, the last four in 52sec. He went fast early, but was stopping over the final stages. Dowry (Anderson) always had the measure of his stablemate Linkman (Barber) throughout a mile in 1.44, the last half being run in 53 3-ssec The former has been working well lately and he may surprise at Awapuni. Bambton (Bryce) and May Repair© (Brace) ran their mile in 1.44 3-5, the last three furlongs in 38sec. The former was doing the better at the finish and W. Bryce has the chestnut in splendid order. Robin Dayes (H. Ford) was doing better than Lord Neptune (Shaw) at the finish of a mile in 1.45, the last half requiring 53 2-ssec. Military Chief (McClure) came home the last three furlongs of his work easily in 43sec. Lord Robert (McFarlane./ sprinted half a mile in 51sec. Pierre (McFarlane), Royal Tan (Anderson) and Renowned (Eastwood) provided the feature gallop ol the morning. They jumped away at the mile peg, Pierre and Royal Tan soon drawing out well clear of Renowned. The two first-named kept on terms until halfway down the straight, where Pierre forged to the front to beat Royal Tan by a length, with Renowned making up ground fast to be almost on terms with the southerner. The mile was run in 1.44, the last seven furlongs in 1.29, the four in 50 l-ssec, and the three in 37 2-ssec. Pierre accomplished his task iru pressively and it will not be on the score of fitness if he fails to make a forward showing in the Manawatu Cup. Though being kicked up to hia work over the concluding stages. Royal Tan worked soundly and he looks in solid condition for Saturday’s engagement. Renowned’s mission over the holidays will be the Wairarapa Cup on New Year’s Day. Te Kooti (McClure) and Lady Guillotine (Bryce) were let off with an easy six furlongs, the last four taking 53 4-ssec. The two-year-old Blue Teal (Eastwood) beat his stablemate Fairest way (Anderson) by a couple of lengths over five furlongs, the last four being run In 51sec. On the plough, Beau Conte (Walker) finished four lengths ahead ot Birdman (Anderson) over seven furlongs in 1.35, the last three in 40 2-5 sec. Beau Conte worked with great dash, and this former good three-year-old may be on the verge of returning to form. He is engaged in the Manawatu Cup on Saturday. Double Paper (Page) and Flying Agnes (Searle) were both under a good hold while traversing half a mile in 54 2-ssec.
