This number, however, was 'slightly less than the 1547 figures and ! considerably less than those of the j two previous elections. Mr A. E. Urwin, Mayor in the previ- ' ous two terms, was returned un- | opposed.

WANGANUI HOSPITAL BOARD REPRESENTATIVE.

| For the position ,of Waimarino ' County-Ohakune-Raetihi representative on the Wanganui Hospital Board, the retiring member, Mr L. W. Nation, was opposed by Mr D. F. Scarrow, for the past term deputy chairman of the Waimarino County Council. On the day of the election Mr Scarrow was lying seriously ill in the Waimarino Public Hospital, he having undergone a severe operation earlier in the week. This setback, however, proved nothing in the nature of a handicap to Mr Scarrow’s chances and he recorded a comfortable win, the figures being: D. F. Scarrow 490, L. W. Nation 287. WAIMARINO COUNTY COUNCIL. The only surprise in the whole of j the district elections was the defeat I of Mr D. J. Berry, in the Manganui Riding of the Waimarino county. In this riding there were three nominations for two seats and the support accorded the candidates was: D. F. Scarrow 137, D. E. Alabaster 94, D. J. Berry 83. Mr Eerry has been a representative of this riding for 21 years, and, in I addition to this, he has held the posij tion of chairman of tho county for 15 consecutive years, ending with the I past term. Mr Berry did outstanding [work for hi s county during his long term of office and at the last meeting was entered in the county rmecords. Mr Alabaster, who unseated Mr Berry, is a young man and this was his first attempt for council honours.
