WOMEN’S LAND ARMY TO DISBAND AFTER 11 YEARS’ SERVICE
LONDON, Nov. 21 (Rec. 7 pm).— Formed eleven years ago, the Women’s Land Army is to be disbanded on November 30, but nearly 6000 girls, who served in it, will continue to work on farms. In 1943 the W.L.A. had 78,000 members. A spokesman of the National Farmers’ Union said: “Some of the farmers prefer girls for light work, such as dairying and poultry and we are glad that some are staying, even though the Government has decided to disband the army.” Some of the girls will be employed by agricultural executive committees who have taken over a number of hostels formerly occupied by the Land Army.- Special N.Z.P.A. Correspondent.
