COMMONWEALTH PARLIAMENTARIANS VISIT WANGANUI

Leader of the British delegation to the British Commonwealth Parliamentary Association's conference in Wellington, the Rt. Hon. Viscount Alexander, arrived with a party of Comonweaith Parliamentarians in Wanganui yesterday in the course of a New Zealand tour.

One of the outstanding figures in British Labour circles, Viscount Alexander was First Lord of the Admiralty during World War 11, was the first Secretary of Defence and now holds the Cabinet rank of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Accompanied by the Hon. J. T. Paul, M.L.C., Mr. D. M. Rae, M.P. for Parnell, and Mr. J. H. Wiliamson, tour manager, Department of Internal Affairs, the party yesterday afternoon inspected the Putiki Maori Church and later made a motor trip over Gentle Annie. They were guests of the Wjanganui Club on their return. Today the visitors will be taken on a sightseeing tour of the city and suburbs, and will have morning tea at Virginia Lake. In the afternoon they will visit Mr. J. G. Alexander’s property at Maxwell. On 'Wednesday morning the party will pay a brief visit to Hawera, returning to Wanganui the same day. They leave for Wellington on Thursday. Another party of delegates will be in Wanganui on Thursday. The delegates are staying at the Rutland Hotel.

Included in the party are:— Brigadier Sir G. S. Harvie-Watt, a Conservative M.P. who was parliamentary private secretary to Mr. Churchill from 1941 until 1945. Sir George is a Barrister at Law (Inner Temple). Senator Dr. the Hon. L. A. Rajapakse, Minister of Justice and Leader of the Senate, Ceylon. He is a lecturer and examiner at the Ceylon Law College, Hon. Sir Francis Molamure, KBE, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ceylon. Mr. Ralph St. L. P. Deraniyagaia, Clerk of the House of Representatives, Ceylon, and Barrister at Law (Inner Temple). Dr. and Hon. C. E. Millien, MLC, a member of the Mauritius legislature, who in private life is a medical practitioner. Mr. Anthony R. Hurd, a Conservative Party member of the House of Commons. Mr. Hurd is a fellow oi the Institute of Journalists and has been agricultural correspondent of the London Times since 1932. Dr. Omar H. Malik, of Pakistan, a lecturer of mathematics and Pakistan Ambassador to Indonesia.
