TAIHAPE NEWS

Swimming Club Meeting A proposal by the Taihape Borough Council that the Swimming Club should take over control of the swimming baths and pay the custodian and other expenses and retain all receipts was unanimously rejected at the annual meeting of the cl.b. In reporting on the past season, the president remarked that it had been successful from many points of view. Two club members had been successful at the Wanganui Centre championships. He paid a tribute to the services rendered by Mr and Mu Hcffer, Mr and Mrs B. Niven and Miss Helen Joyce. He also thanked all who had helped the club, including the executive officers and officials at swimming sports and the donors of trophies and supporters. The club had a strong junior membership but required more women members. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr D. Woodhead; president, Mr Colin Gregory; vicepresidents, Messrs R. Auld, S. Kirkpatrick, F. M. Healey, E. Annear; delegate to Wanganui Centre, Mr Parge ter; joint secretaries and treasurers, Mrs D. George and Miss Brenda George; auditor, Mr JZ. B. Hesketh; executive committee, Messrs F. M. Healey, P. Clarkson, R. Auld, J. B. Hesketh and Mrs Longley, with power to add. CONTROL OF BATHS. A letter was received from the Taihape Borough Council inquiring if the club was prepared to take over control of the baths and pointing out that if so the club would have to pay all expenses and retain all receipts. Mr F. M. Healey said that as far back as 1925 the club used to run the baths, but handed over control to the Borough Council in 1928 because of the loss involved. “We could do something if the Borough Council paid the custodian and let us control the baths," he remarked. Mr Healey moved that the club reject the proposal to take over the baths. Mr Auld seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Mr J. B. Hesketh, the retiring secretary, gave some details of receipts and expenses in connection with the baths during the past two seasons. Last year's receipts amounted to £92, and expenses were £llB, resulting in a loss of £26. The previous season the loss was £ll, the takings being £ll6 and the expenditure £127. Mr Auld moved that a learn-to-swim period of a fortnight be set aside during the season. The chairman seconded the motion, which was carried MEMORIAL PARK SCHEME.

Mr F. M. Healey moved a motion that it was the considered opinion of the Swimming Club that if the original war memorial scheme decided upon by ballot was not carried out then all schemes should be referred back to the people, and that the views of the club on the matter be made known to the public hrough the Press. The motion was carried unanimously, members agreeing that the public should have another vote on all schemes. POSTAL VOTES. Electors wishing to record postal votes at the Hospital Board election on November 18 should make early application to the returning officer at Taihape, Mr W. Hudson. Residents of Mangaweka desiring to vote by post should also make application to the Taihape returning officer.
