CHICQUITA BEATEN IN C.B. FISHER PLATE AT FLEMINGTON RACES

MELBOURNE, Nov. 12 (Recd. 6.30 pm).—On the final day of the V.R.C. spring meeting at Flemington yesterday Chiquita, which has finished second in the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup this season, was an oddson favourite in a field of four for the C. B. Fisher Plate, a standard weight-for-age race over a mile and a-half. It was generally expected that the small field and the distance would be in her* favour. However, she never appeared a likely winner and evidently her strenuous running in the past few weeks has affected her. The winner, Playboy, nearly fell in the Melbourne Cup and was pulled up. It was at first thought that he had broken down, but he was all right when he cooled off. Yesterday he finished well to defeat Delta, which appeared to have the race won 50 yards from the post.

Playboy, which greatly disappointed his owner-trainer, Tommy Smith, in the L. K. S. Mackinnon Stakes last Saturday, evidently has Improved, although he has had a fair amount of facing this season.

The V.R.C. Handicap, usually regarded as a consolation stake for beaten horses in the Melbourne Cup, was won by Dashing Beau, who has shown fair form recently. He dashed to the front immediately the straight was entered and although he was stopping at the finish he lasted long enough to defeat Bold John by half a length. Free Kick, which has not shown any form for some time, was a firm favourite. Backers who expected a great improvement were disappointed as he was never going comfortably and the best could do was to finish fifth. Details of results:—
