PROMISING MEETING OPENS ATHLETIC AND CYCLING SEASON

Wanganui’s 1950-51 athletic and track cycling season got away to a good start last evening when the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club held a twilight sports meeting on Cook’s Gardens. The events drew promisingly large fields for the season’s first meeting. The form shown was good. The race of the programme was the one and a-half mile scratch cycle race. The six laps found out the weaker members of the large field, and it was left to D. Mitchell, C. Dickinson and A. Higgs to make a race of the finish. Mitchell tried to break out at the start of the bell lap, but Dickinson followed him through with Higgs close behind. In the home straight, Dickinson made the pace, holding off Higgs for a close finish, with Mitchell third. Results were:— CYCLING. Half-mile handicap.—First heat; C. Dickinson 1, A. Higgs 2, F.
