DEMOCRATS RETAIN SLENDER CONTROL IN U.S. HOUSE AND SENATE

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8.- -Results in the American elections have reached a stage where it is conclusive that the Democrats have retained control of the House of Representatives. This was accomplished when they had elected 218 candidates. The Democrats have also retained

control of the Senate, but the majority in that chamber has been reduced to two. Final tabulaUons showed that the Democrats have elected 18 Senators, to give them 49 seats ( while the Republicans have elected 18, for a total of 47. The latter figure showed a net gain of five for the Republicans. The Democrats’ two-seat majority is the smallest of any party since 1931.

The Republicans made it plain today that they will seek Mr Acheson’s dismissal from the post of Secretary of State. The influential Republican, Mr Harold Stassen, said the election results were a significant repudiation of the administration's Far Eastern policy. ‘1 w’ould assume with these election results that Mr Acheson would resign.” 3k
