Mrs S. Newsome, Kent Road, St. John’s Hill, is visiting Auckland, where she is the guest of her daughter, Mrs C. W. Harris.

Mrs F. Oldham and Miss Oldham, of Taihape, will arrive in Wanganui today and will be the guests of Mrs H. R. Beauchamp, Glasgow Street, for the A. and P. Show,

Mrs F. M. Stowers, of Wanganui, was a recent caller at New Zealand House, London, reports New Zealand News. Mrs E. W. E. Carter, Bignell Stret, Gonville, leaves Wanganui today to take up residence at Foxton. Yesterday afternoon she was farewelled at an afternoon tea gathering in the D.I.C. tearooms by the Wanganui branch of the National Council of Women.

Lady Nelson, wife of Sir George Nelson, chairman and managing director of the English Electric Company airived in Wellington by Solent on Tuesday. They have come from England via Canada, United States and Australia. Sir George is in the Dominion for consultations with the Railways and State Hydro-electric Department. Lady Nelson takes great interest in her husband’s work, and she’ devotes a great deal of her time to the welfare of workers. News has been received that Miss Ena Rapley, the well-known New Zealand soprano now living in England, is to open a season on November 21 at the Cafe Royal, West End, London. Miss Rapley is appearing under the professional name of Elizabeth Gray. Mrs E. Goldsmith, of Invercargill, celebrated her 101 th. birthday on Sunday. For her years she is in remarkably good health. Her eyesight still permits her to do patchwork and to read, her chief occupations these days. Mrs Goldsmith went to Southland 76 years ago as a young married woman, where for many years her husband was engaged in farming in the Mabel Bush district. She has 31 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchild-ren.

Plunket Rest Room At Show. So that mothers of young children may enjoy the show on Saturday, the Plunket Society has arranged to operate a rest room and baby minding service, for which a small fee will be charged. There will be a staff in attendance, of Plunket and Karitane Nurses. The room is on the first floor of the Stewards’ Stand and hours of service will be from 11 a.m. till 4.30 p.m. Unusual Butcher’s Shop. A Cockle Bay butcher, Mr. Les Robinson, believes that his customers should be comfortable. His shop near Auckland has luxury fittings, including a sofa, smokers’ companion, floor matting and radio. There are flowers instead of meat in the landscape window, which provides sunshine and a view of Cockle Bay. A barometer indicates tomorrow’s weather anti part of the cream woodwork is decorated’ with nursery murals. Mr. Robinson built the furnishings and his wife advised on the decorations. Garden Circle Meeting. The Westbourne W-I. Garden Circle held its meeting at the home of Mrs Mclntyre, Patapu Street, Wanganui East on Tuesday, when the convener, Mrs S. Copp, welcomed 18 members and a visitor, Mrs Pascoe. Mrs C. R. Stilborn read letters of thanks from Mrs E. Butler and Mrs Christie, for gifts received. Two social competitions arranged by Mrs Chant were won by Mrs Wadham and Mrs Stilborn. Members exchanged plants and held a round-table talk on the growing of plants. A competition for miniature floral cradles, judged by Mrs W. Gillies, resulted: Mrs. Vinten 1, Mrs Stilborn 2, Mrs Uttley 3. Mrs E. Stewart gave a modern floral demonstration. Members went round the garden, bright with roses and other flowers, and admired its neatness. M.rs Copp presented Mrs Stewart and the hostess each with a bunch of lily-of-the-valley. The next meeting will be held at Mrs Uttley’s home.
