Brevities From Tuesday's City Council Meeting

Acting on a recommendation made by the Works Committee, the Wanganui City Council, at its meeting on Tuesday night, agreed to a request from the Wanganui Fire Board that as opporunity offers the 14 fire phi **3 now situated alongside kerbs in Victoria Avenue be removed to the middle of the street. The cost involved is approximately £250. It is not proposed to alter the position of existing pillar hydrants. ♦ * * » The Housing Department will be asked by the council to reserve sufficient land in Puriri Street-Harper Street sub-division, where State houses are being built, for the erection of a community hall and two churches. This was decided by the council after considering a recommendation from the Works Committee. * ♦ * *

A suggestion that funds available from the 1949 and 1950 carnivals, together with profits from future carnivals, should be used for providing a modern soundshell on a suitable central site was made by the Tourist,. Publicity and Development Committee and has been referred to the incoming committee. Sites suggested for consideration are Queen’s Park, Moutoa Gardens and the city river bank area. Residents in the locality had complained about the practice of boys climbing on the parapet, of the Durie Hill tower, stated the Reserves Committee. It asked that the city engineer (Mr Row) be requested to report on the possibility of erecting a canopy over the tower so as to overcome the risk of accident. The report was adopted. A recommendation that the incoming council give favourable consideration to the question of providing a shelter and paddling pool at Peat Park was made by the Reserves Committee. “The finance for these projects has been available from the time they were first mooted, but the delay in proceeding with the work has been occasioned only by a shortage of the necessary materials,” the committee stated. Acting on a suggestion made by the Tourist, Publicity and Development Committee, the council decided that a carnival be held in January next, at the same time of the month as preiviously. If practicable the carnival attractions are to be confined to Anniversary Day week-end. The Tourist, Publicity and Development. Committee reported that the necessary informaion regarding a documentary film of Wanganui had not yet been received. The question had been referred to the incoming committee.
