Wins For Taihape And Army The Taihape Cricket Association’! competition opened on Saturday with wins for Taihape and Army over Navy and Manqaweka, respectively. Bowlers called the tune in the opening series, particularly in the game at the Domain where Taihape. last year's champions, twice disposed of Navy for very low scores. The other game saw Army, re-entering the local competition after a spell of three years playing in the Ruapehu Association, obtain the necessary runs in a race against the clock to score a first innings win over Mangaweka. Scores in the games were: Taihape, 126 for 5, declared; Navy, 34 and 13. Army. 133 for 5; Mangaweka, 128 for 9 declared. Competition points as a result: Taihape 8, Army 5, Mangaweka 1, Navy 0. Country had the bye. Outstanding individual performance of the series was the bowling of H. Jones for Taihape, who took five wickets for 4 runs off four overs in Navy’s first innings and nine wickets for 1 run off six overs in the second i innings. SWIMMING CLUB Discussion on the Borough Council’s proposal that the Taihape Amateur Swimmi'ng Club should take over control of the municipal baths will take place at the annual meeting of the club tomorrow (Thursday) night. GOLF CLOSING. There was a wide representation of golfers from neighbouring clubs for the official closing of the Taihape Golf Club's 1950 season on Sunday. A mixed foursomes competition over 12 holes was won by Miss J. Rayner and B. J. Collerton, with a nett score of 49. The ladies’ approaching competition was won by Mrs June Mortland, while C. O. Mortland was the winner of the men's approaching. The winners of the putting competition, which was particularly well patronised, were Mrs Joyce Waterworth (ladles) and Alex Mortland (men). Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies. The visitors were officially welcomed by the president, Mr S. D. Kirkpatrick. Messrs W. Thurston (Utiku), D. Bell (Rangiwaea), H. Manson (Waimarino) and D. Mr Jack Evans, who. said Mr Collerton, had laid the foundation of his game (Mr Evans was champion of the Taihape Golf Club for many years in the early days).
