CITY COUNCIL PAYS WARM TRIBUTE TO MR. S. I. COX

Tributes to the long service given by Mr. S. I. Cox, who retired three weeks ago from the position of superintendent of parks and reserves, were paid when he was met by the Wanganui City Council during the supper adjournment at the monthly meeting last night. Mr. Cox, who has conducted 40 years’ continuous service, first of all with the Wanganui Borough Council, and later with the City Council was presented with an occasional table and a tobacco pouch. Making the presentation, the chairman of the Reserves Committee, Cr. R. N. Wilson, said that because of his wide knowledge of reserves, Mr. Cox was held in high regard throughout New Zealand. He had obviously found pleasure in working for “a very fine city." “He has loyally and faithfully given his best to the people he has served through the years,” said the town clerk Mr C. R. White, who commented that he had been associated with Mr. Cox over a long period of years. “Mr. Cox made a great success of his job, largely because he didn’t stand off and merely direct his men, but gqt in and personally showed them how to do it,” said the city engineer, Mr. L. F. Row. After the Mayor, Hon. w. J. Rogers, M.L.C., had added his tribute, Mr. Cox said that when he started 40 years ago, he did not think the job would last long because at that time reserves work was nil.
