GENERAL NEWS

Scots Memorial Hall Following a recommendation made by the Finance Committee, the Wanganui City Council, at its monthly meeting last night, decided to make a grant of £25 toward the building fund of the Scots Memorial Hall. It was stated the fund now stood at £BOl3, the object being £lO,OOO by December. Motor-Cyclist Injured Slight, injuries were suffered by Mr. R. Reuben, Putiki, yesterday morning when the motor-cycle he was riding was involved in a collision with a car at the corner of Rangitikel ana Kitche'ner Streets, Wanganui 2*aet. He was taken by ambulance to the Wanganui Hospital and after treatment was able to return to his home.

City Brochure A brochure for distribution to visitors to Wanganui and also to travel and tourist agencies in other parts of the Dominion, is being produced by the Tourist, Publicity and Development Committee of the Wanga'nui City Council. The committee reported to the council at its monthly meeting last night that an order had been placed for 25,000 copies. Photographs of the city and district are to be included.

City Gas Supplies “It has taken the whole month to readjust our manufacturing plant to normal routines after the complete disorganisation caused by cessation of coal supplies late in September,” stated the engineer and manager of the Gas Department, Mr. J. W. Atkinson, reporting to the City Council last night on operations during October. "The very mild v/eather this month has aided us considerably in getting back to normal working by causing less demand for gas.”

Crrlet Trophy Shooting. Army cadet units at the Wanganui Collegiate School, the Wanganui Technical College, and St. Augustine’ College are now engaged in small-bore rifle shooting for two trophies. They are expected to complete their shoots by the end of this month. The trophies at stake are the Empire Challenge Shield, competed for by rifle teams throughout the British Commonwealth, and the Press Shield, a New Zealand competition. No. .303 calibre shooting for the Earl Roberts Shield is being undertaken in this district this year.

Not So Generous! The joke about the church collection that garnered a few farthing and several buttons has been long out-worn, but the organisers of the Castlecliff and Aramoho Sea Scouts’ bonfire at Castlecliff Beach on Saturday night have a new version of the tale. The Scouts’ building funds benefited by £l9 8s 6d by the collection taken up in the large crowd at the beach. Originally, the total was put at £l9 13s 4d, but two "half-crowns” later began to show up in their true colours —as pennies, hidden for a time under a chemically-applied skin of "silver.” The ruse discovered, the coins were added to the other £4 10s worth of pennies which were collected on the beach.

Value of City Orchids. Some idea of the value of the collection of orchids at the Centennial Winter Gardens, Virginia Lake Reserve, was given by Mr. S. I. Cox, who retired recently from the position or superintendent of parks and reserves, when entertained by the Wanganui City Council at s,upper last night. Mr Cox said that the collection originally cost the council £7, but today was worth about £5OO. If the orchids were divided as nurserymen would divide them, their value would probably be £750. When he joined the reserves department 40 years ago, the council did not have a nursery, Mr. Cox added. Most of the trees, ornamental and timber, now thriving in the city’s reserves were raised under his guidance.
