Successful Garden Party At Gonville School
Well-attended and held in fine weather, the annual garden party at the Gonville School on Saturday was most successful. Fancy dress and decorated cycle competitions were among the events and the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band added to the entertainment with a number of selections. Chairman of the school committee, Mr W. F. Cummings, opened the garden party. Mesdames Buie and Lockett judged the children’s fancy dresses and Mr and Mrs C. P. Bates judged the decorated cycles. Mrs L. T. Webb Jones judged the sponge cakes. Results were:—
Primers’ fancy dress: Best girl, Wendy Brice; best boy, Michael Whiteman; most original boy, Max Workman; most original girl, Joan Bell. Standards I, 2 and 3: Best girl, P. Chainey; best boy, B. Willcox; most original girl, M. Johnston; most original boy, C. Guthrie. Decorated cycles: Champion (Mr L. Chainey's special), B. Willis; first consolation boys, C. Broadhead; second consolation, M. Lang; third consolation, D. Brice; first girls’ consolation, Elaine Willis; second girls’ consolation, Joy Bell; third girls’ consolation, Alison Powell.
Sponge cake competition: Butterless sponge, Mrs Young 1, Mrs Newman 2, Mrs Chrysall 3, Miss M. Weir v.h.c., Miss B. Brittain; butter sponge, Mrs Jackson 1, Mrs Good 2, Mrs Chrysall 3; children’s sponge, Mrs Jackson 1, Mrs Good 2, Mrs Chrysall 3; children’s sponge. Rita Webb 1, Ann Johnston 2, Marie Bevan 3, Elizabeth Johnston v.h.c.
