ARRANGEMENTS FOR HAWKE CUP CRICKET CHALLENGE MATCHES
NAPIER, Last Night (PA).— Hawke’s Bay, holders of the Hawke Cup, will shortly be called upon to defend the trophy three times in less than three weeks following a direction received by the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association from the New Zealand Cricket Council. Taranaki will be the first challengers, and this match must be completed not later than December 18. The Hawke’s Bay Association has chosen December 15, 16 and 18 as the dates for the match. The second challengers will be Poverty Bay, who have been alloted a match at Christmas. The New Year week-end will see the third match, but the province lodging the challenge has yet to be decided on an elimination basis laid down by the New Zealand Cricket Council. This provides for elimination matches between Marlborough and Nelson, Bay of Plenty and Waikato, Wairarapa and Southern Hawke's Bay, Rangitikei and Manawatu. and Wanganui and Hutt Valley. The council stipulates that the first three matches named must be played not later than Christmas. If Marlborough is successful against Nelson, it will be the third challenger for the Hawke Cup. If Marlborough is defeated and Bay of Plenty beats Waikato, Bay of Plenty will be given the fixture. In the event of neither Marlborough nor Bay of Plenty being successful in the elimination round, the winners of the match between Wairarapa and Southern Hawke's Bay will be the challengers. Challenge priorities (hereafter are in the following order: Wang mu’. Manawatu, Rangitikei, Nelson and Hutt Valley.
