PROTECTION OF YOUNG PEOPLE AGAINST LIQUOR EVIL SOUGHT
The youth leaders of the National Council of Churches report a widespread concern that young people on regular staffs of offices, factories and shops, and also secondary school youths taking casual labour, are subject to temptations against which It is the responsibility of the employer to afford some measure of protection, stated a letter from the secretary of he council, Mr E. S. Hoddenott, received by the Wanganui Chamber ot Commerce last night. Evidence was given of young boys and girls being pressed to share in Christmas celebrations in big city shops and some being persuaded to drink intoxicating liquor, the letter continued. “We believe that you will feel equal concern to our own that these things are happening, and believing that, you will feel your responsibilities and prevent it. "We request that you, who are In a strategic position to do so, will take the strongest possible measures to prevent young people being exposed to such temptations. With the approach of Christmas this matter becomes a revelant issue."
The chairman, Mr G. G. Burgess: We can only receive the letter. "The writer is on the right lines, and we should thank him for the letter," said Mr R. G. Taiboys.
