Labrador’s Success. Messrs Robbie and Izard’s yellow Labrador, Treacle of Pembroke, was runner-up to the best dog of the show at the Manawatu Kennel Club’s dog show on Saturday. Treacle of Pembroke won the open stakes and the sporting stakes also. Air Service Cancelled A mechanical fault and bad weather caused the cancellation of the flying-boat service from Sydney to Wellington yesterday. The aircraft is now due at Evans Bay at 7 a.m. today. Among the passengers who were expected yesterday was the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Oram, and Mrs Oram. Health Stamp Sales Health stamp sales for October totalled £110,630, £BOOO more than for the same period last year and £l2OO more than for the whole time the stamps were on sale last year, according to a General Post Office announcement today. Stocks of stamps are still held, particularly lid stamps. —(PA) Fire in Oar. A machine from the Central Fire Station was called to deal with a fire which had broken out in the seating upholstery of a motor-car parked in Guyton Street at 5.49 p.m. yesterday. Using bucket pumps, firemen quelled the fire when it had done only slight damage. Earlier yesterday, at 1.16 p.m., the brigade answered a justified false alarm in 71 Bedford Avenue. Rain Delays Shipping. Steady rain at Wanganui yesterday, particularly in the morning, caused a suspension of all work on the waterfront, with the result that two coastal vessels were delayed. One of them, the Rata, arrived at Castlecliff at 7.20 a.m. yesterday with 800 tons of coal from Greymouth. Weather permitting, the vessel will begin discharge this morning and complete tomorrow. The other vessel delayed was the Apanui, which arrived at the Town Wharf on Sunday evening with sugar and general cargo from Onehunga direct. Tourist Licence Supported. Support for the application for a tourist licence for Pipiriki House was expressed at last night’s meeting of the council of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce. The courtcil authorised the secretary, Mr F. H. Donaldson, to present evidence on behalf of the chamber and to communicate with the solicitor for the proprietors as a preliminary to the compilation of evidence from the chamber. The decision was the result of a request from Mr R. M. L. Jones, of Hunterville, on behalf of the Wanganui Rivpr Services Ltd. Inter-Oollege Cricket Off Rain and a sodden wicket cancelled the two-day cricket match between King’s College (Auckland) and Wanganui Collegiate School, which was to have begun on the school ground yesterday. Provided no further rain falls, however, the wicket is expected to have dried out enough for a oneday match today. This is the Auckland college s first trip to Wanganui for a cricket fixture against Collegiate School, but Rugby matches have been played for several years. Whether the game goes on or hot, the Auckland team, which arrived yesterday morning, will leave Wanganui tonight. Land Settlement. “Although the over-all number of ex-servicemen participating in ballots for land is still comparatively high, there is an increasing tendency fcr applicants to concentrate on the more attractive properties in selected districts, ’ slates the annual report of the Department of Lands and Survey. “There has been a lessening of interest in some of the larger store sheep and grazing propositions, where applicants are required to deposit a substantial sum toward the cost of their establishment, but even in this category the better-class property still attracts reasonable interest, despite the substantial deposits normally required.” Woe’ Buyers Arrive. The fourth and last quarterly sessions for 1957 of the Supreme Court in Wanganui, which opened before Mr Justice Hay yesterday are likely to extend into next week, fixtures having already been mode for November 13 and 14.
