Mission And Jangada Win Totalisator Double At The Stratford Spring Meeting

(By “KESTREL.”)

Mission, winner of the Waverley Cup on Labour Day, carried his record further when he won the Stratford Handicap, principal event on Saturday at the Stratford Racing Club’s spring meeting.

Mission was ridden by the Palmerston North horseman, W. L. Aitken, who completed a double when he steered Lady Coronach to victory in the following race, the Stewart Handicap. First leg of the double totalisator was the Budge Memorial Hack Handicap, in which the Awapuni-trained Peak Halyard coif Jangada scored a comfortable victory. Mission completed the double. Weather conditions were good, though the sky was overcast later in the afternoon and there was a keen | southerly. The track was easy after j rain and there was a good attend- | ance. Totalisator investments for the day ' amounted to £48.155, including £4114 ! 10s on the double, compared with j £50,106 for the club’s jubilee spring• meeting last year. On Jangada, winner of the Budge j Memorial Hack, 1737 ten-shilling * tickets were taken out, and of these i 385 were redeemed on Mission, winner of the Stratford Handicap, the doubles dividend being £l7 13s for £l. STRATFORD HANDICAP Each-way favourite but at a reasonable price, Mission repeated his Waverley Cup success in the Stratford Handicap, running on solidly to win from the little-fancied Lord Kenneth and the improving Battle Strife. Offender led out of the straight from Battle Strife, Leighdine, Sly Robin, Master McGrath, Secret Ruler, Mission and Chung Chong. Before they reached the six furlongs Leighdine had taken over and she led past the half-mile, with Offender, Master McGrath, Mercian Lad, Chung Chong and Mission next. Leighdine was still clear at the straight entrance but Mission came through the held and Lord Kenneth made a run wide out. Mission holding on a couple of i lengths ahead of Lord Kenneth, who was a length and a-half in front ot Battle Strife. The last-named got third money on the photo over Master McGrath. Sly Robin and offender were next. LADY CORONACH’S SPRINT Lady Coronach made amends for her Waverley defeat when she led the field home in the Stewart Handicap, ridden by W. L. Aitken, who had been successful on Mission. Mallow was left at the peg and took no part in the race. Lady Coronach reached the front inside a furlong, and Consulate, Square Dink, Sir Royal and Sentimental were next, ahead of Silver Sam. Mr Justice ran up to follow Lady Coronach across the top and into the straight, the pair being clear of Silver Sam, Square Dink, Sir Royal and Sentimental. Consulate came fast in the straight but failed by a neck to reach Lady Coronach. A length and a-half back Silver Sam beat Sentimental for third, and then came Mr Justice and Bella Mia. JANGADA WINS HACK CUP Jangada was installed favourite for the Budge Memorial Hack .«nd duly obliged his army of support f.s, leading practically all the way to win from the forlorn outsider Karomin, who paid £3O 6s for a place. 4 tenter Glow was chopped out at the start and Strathconan and Jangada showed out, the last-named going into the lead out of the straight and being followed into the back by Balagmore, Strathconan, Karomin, Lucky Client. Hoeroa. St. Martin, Polleta and Fighting Fox. Balagmore and Karomin were almost on terms with Jangada at the half-mile and when Balagmore dropped back Jangada and Karomin were left clear into the straight, w’ith Balagmore, Lucky Client and Amber Glow at the head of the others and Hoeroa near the tail of the field. In the run to the post Jangada came away to win by four lengths from Karomin, who was a length in front of Hoeroa and Divided. Fighting Fox was next, ahead of Amber Glow, Polleta, Now Then and Meg. EASY FOR BROIESOME The Marton-trained Broiesome repeated his Waverley success when he scored a hollow victory in the Spring Hurdles, which proved a chapter of accidents. Broiesome waited while first Sparkia and then Minion made the pace. He was taken to the front half a mile from home and never afterwards looked like being beaten, winning by a dozen lengths from an outsider in T Francis Mond, who was four lengths in front of Minion. Tory tell at the second fence and Pola came to griet at the fourth, in the back stretch, bringing down Silver Pal, Incision and Foveran. Delinquent dipped at the hurdle four furlongs from home, but his rider, K. Lawrence, scrambled back into the saddle and eventually beat Sparkia for fourth money. LOWGARTH TRIAL STAKES The dividend-payers in the divisions of the Lowgarth Trial Stakes were well backed, with the exception of Con Defoe, runner-up to Neptune's Model in the second. The Te Aroha-trained Probation gelding Penryn followed Chatton and Miss Robin into the straight in the first division and then held on solidly to beat the favourite, Brabazon. Neptunes Model led all the way to win the second division, having the advantage of being trained on the course. She was followed home by Con Defoe and Fox Plato. PEMBROKE TRIAL STAKES The Pembroke Trial Stakes, for three-year-old non-winners, went to the Awapuni-trained Rhodes Scholar filly Hinekura, who held off a strong > challenge from the favourite. Admiral’s Pay. Admiral’s Pay and Hinekura were several places back w’hen Query and Kyandra led Mister Louvain and Phamad across the top and into the straight.. The pair then came away for Hinekura to get a half-head decision on the photo.

WINNER FROM NEW PLYMOUTH The Autopay gelding Cargo, trained at New Plymouth, won the Mahoe Hack Handicap handily from Cool Waters. Justice, Eulogette, General Sand, Goldcille and Belle Loch led at the half-mile, but Cool Waters and Cargo moved up on the home turn. Working to the front at the last furlong Cargo was going too well for Cool Waters and General Sand, with Justice a close fourth. CHALUCK WINS THE LAST Forest Tor, favourite for the concluding event, had to be content with second place behind the Haweratrained Chaluck. Vigorous, Bandbox and Flotilla led across the top, where Admiral Derision moved up, followed by Forest [Tor. Chaluck came with a sustained : run to win going away, and Amber | Glow came home well for third, ahead lof Admiral Derision and Black Mar'ket.
