WANGANUI-MANAWATU BEATEN BY TARANAKI IN CRICKET TRIAL

HAWERA, Last Night (PA). —Wan-ganui-Manawalu were beaten on the first innings by Taranaki in a trial match played at Hawera today to help select the Central Districts Plunkel Shield team. The batting of both sides was disappointing and most of the bowlers were flattered by their final figures. J. Spedding, the Taranaki captain, scored a steady 59 and B. Poananga bowled weil for the combined side to take six wickets for 18 runs.

Taranaki began quietly against the attack of Cave and Little, and runs came slowly before the first wicket fell at 26, when Mcßride was run out for 8. Cave had Hurcomb caught behind without further score and with the score still at 26 Kenyon played forward to Poananga to be given out leg before. Simpson appeared uncomfortable facing Beard, and when lifting his bat to let one go through from Poananga, was clean bowled for 1. Two balls later the same bowler brought one back to Gill, a lefthander, and clean bowled him. At this stage Cave had bowled 7 overs, 5 maidens and had taker, one for three, and Poananga had bowled 5 overs, 4 maidens and taken 3 for 2.

Walker took over from Colquhoun behind the wickets and Brown and Bergerson replaced Poananga and Beard as bowlers. Alexander and Spedding carried the score from 29 to 68 with restrained batting when the luncheon adjournment was taken. They continued until 79 was reached, when Alexander was caught at leg slip by Harford. Spedding continued to bat steadily to reach his 59 in 85 minutes before being caught behind the bowler when attempting to hit Poananga.

The innings closed at 2.30 with a total of 124, of which 33 were extras. The Wanganui-Manawatu bowling impressed as being accurate and at times dangerous, although the batting of the Taranaki team generally lacked force. Poananga finished with the fine figures of six wickets for 18 runs off 13.4 overs. He bowled some excellent balls and maintained a steady length throughout. The fielding showed lapses with some comparatively easy chances missed, but the ground fielding was of a good standard Wanganui-Manawatu opened with Bowden and Pollitt, who were separated at 20, when Hurcomb caught Pollett in the slips for 12 off Hall. Bowden went to Mcßride after he had reached 18, and Harford fell to Hall for the same score. The batting was steady and the bowling unimpressive except for a spell by Hall, when he took three wickets for six runs during three overs. The captain, Onglay, started confidently enongh but was beaten when playing all over a ball from Hall. Four wickets were down for 67 and Bergerson and Poananga scored to reach 79- Then Alexander bowled Poananga for 7. Cockerill was brought on to replace Alexander, and in his second over he clean bowled Bergerson with a beautiful delivery. Six wickets were flown for 82 at 5. a p.m. and the light was starting to fail. Brown skied Cockerill and was caught and bowled. little "dipped” at the wrong ball from the same bowler and went for 1, and the next over from Cockerill saw a low ball claim Colquhoun. Beard, the Wanganui representative footballer and cricketer, and Cave, the New Zealand bowler, stayed together through some uncomfortable moments, but attempted to chase runs, as 40 were still needed. Beard hit Mcßride for a glorious six, but Cave went shortly after with the total at 97. Walker, the twelfth man, batted for a short period before the game was finished, the actual innings having clased at eight minutes to six. Two of the selectors for the fit h Plunket Shield team, Messrs A. M. Onglev and E. Gee, were present at the match which attracted only s small local crowd. TARANAKI. First Innings.
