Cricket CAVE SCORES FIRST CENTURY THIS SEASON

Continuing his last week’s innings of 75, the New Zealand representative, H. B. Cave, scored the first century of the season in Wanganui senior cricket on Saturday. Cave went in last week when his side was struggling for runs and when stumps were drawn | he had tightened the batting for | Wanganui to close the day for 180 for seven wickets. When the innings 1 ended on Saturday he was 106 not out | after a glorious innings lasting 164 ; minutes. Saturday’s games saw the end of the first series and championship points are now: Wanganui 5, Technical Old Eoys 5, United 5, Collegiate 1, Technical 0, Marist 0. Mainly due to Cave’s century, Wanganui had little difficulty in disposing of Technical College for an innings and 88 runs. Technical scored 63 on I the first day and Wanganui replied ] with 237. Poka, with 4 for 57, and , Whit?, 3 for 21, bow’ed well for Technical. In the second innings they did j a little better with 85, to which White. I who showed some attractive scoring > shots, contributed 23. The most impressive batsman, however, was Upston. who was unl >ky to be run out. He had been batting very freely. This match was played on Cook’s Gardens Marist almost brought off a sensational win against Technical Old Boys. On the first day Old Boys made 188, to which Marist replied with 124. Steady bowling by D. Beard, McConway and HONOURS BOARD Batting. H. B. Cave (Wanganui) not out 106 B. Jones (Tech. Old Boys) 51 D. Beard (Marist) .... 38 W. Dustin (United), not out 35 Bowling. J. Felts (United) 6 for 40 J. Giesen (Collegiate), 4 for 43 D. Beard (Marist) 4 for 55 M. Poka (Technical) 4 for 77 Grant saw Old Boys toppie for 140 in their second knock. A lighting innings of 51, characterised by aggression, by B. Jones, saved T. 0.8. from coilapse. When Bailey went out for nought, Farrell and O Connell virtually opened the innings. They were content to score singles occasionally and for a long period the same was hopelessly dull. Beard enlivened things, however, with his 58. When nine wickets had fallen Marist were still 74 runs behind and the game appeared to be over. But Grant (19 not out) and O’Sullivan (32) set about the bowling and put on 42 in a ninth-wicket stand. Played on Cook’s .Gardens, this game ended in an outright win for Technical Old Boys by 32 runs. Set 130 to win in under an hour, Collegiate coula only hit up 72 for three wickets when stumps were drawn at the school grounds on Saturday. On the first day United made 181 and Collegia/- 76 for three. Continuing on Saturday, Hare (20), Russell (32) and Glenn (20), made worthwhile contributions to the total, but Collegiate were 11 runs short when the innings cuosed. Felts, with six for 40, was the main destroyer. It is curious, however, that five of his victims went leg before. Stent ended a good day with a knock of 32 in United’s second innings, which ' losed at 118. Giesen (4 for 43) was the best trundler for Collegiate. Three quick wickets fell in Colle/ate’s second Innings, but D. Hamilton and Hare scored freely, mainly with boundary shots, and at stumps the students were three wickets down for 72.
