FAINT HOPE FOR PASSENGERS ON MISSING AIRCRAFT
SYDNEY, Nov. 5. (Recd. 12.40 a.m.).—Faint hopes for survival of the 40 Indian Seamen and the crew of eight aboard the Air India Constellation, which is missing enroute to Bombay to London, has been raised by a report that smoke has been seen in the vicinity of the 11,000 ft. high Monte Rocciamelone, 20 miles north-west of Turin. This is. along the route of the plane, which left Cairo on Friday morning, and was last heard from when approaching Geneva for a landing. The air rescue centre at Milan said the smoke might indicate survivors trying to signal, and a plane will search the vicinity.
Thousands of troops, police and guides plunged into blizzards in the French Alps yesterday to search for the airliner, but a 60-miles-an-hour gale later forced all the search planes to land, and several ground parties were forced to give up because heavy snow and wind made the job impossible.
